The composition was a celebration of his domestic bliss after years of secretiveness, scandal and longing for a son, and as a show of his undying love for Cosima. The Siegfried Idyll —this title apparently dates from a performance in Meiningen in 1877—remains Wagner's only instrumental work that is regularly played. The main theme is a generous and lilting melody sung by Brünnhilde in act 3 of Siegfried to the words beginning "Ewig war ich" (I always was, I always am, always in sweet yearning bliss). Wagner borrowed Siegfried Idyll's principal themes from Siegfried and Die Walküre (1854-56), where they have specific meanings within the cycle's system of leitmotives. Within the context in Siegfried Idyll, however, these themes are take on a more general nature as expressions of triumphant love and affection.
